Selection on the basis of CAT 2016 Result
The selection process for an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) is an extremely rigorous process that requires quite a lot of preparation. The process for most of the IIMs these days includes a WAT and a PI except for IIM-K & IIM-S where there is also a GD. Each IIM will the send interview letters to the short listed candidates directly. To understand the process in a better way, let’s break it into 3 stages, which are as follow –
Stage 1 – Common Aptitude Test (CAT)
The first step is to write CAT (or even the GMAT for foreign nationals). The purpose of the CAT is to sift out candidates for the final interview. The criteria for getting a call from IIM is discussed below and an admission varies from year to year, but the percentile cutoffs are generally high.
Stage 2 – The Interview
The interview at the IIMs (Group Discussions are not there at IIM A/B/C but are there at others) are usually taken by a group of people associated with the IIM, be it the faculty, ex-faculty or in some cases even alumni. The interviews are generally very open ended and very contrary to what most people believe, not random. Everything they ask is related to you or something you talk about.
In the IIM interview, try putting your case forward as to what you can bring to the institute, how you can contribute to the learning process and how your experience makes you well equipped to pick up what will be taught.
Stage 3 – Conversion
Every institute has laid down certain criteria for selection, where CAT score, academic history and performance in interview are taken into consideration. Using the admission criteria, a list is drawn and the candidates are finally selected.
Important Documents Required
In case the candidate gets a call from IIM, he/she will be required to furnish the following documents for the purpose of eligibility verifications –
- Mark sheets and Degree certificates – Original mark sheets along with attested copies of the same.
- If belonging to Reservation Category, then certificates supporting the same – Original copy must be brought for furnishing and a photocopy of the same must be submitted there.
- Candidates still pursuing last year of graduation – Need to submit an attested copy of the original certificate obtained from concerned authority specifying the fulfillment of required marks.
How will I get a call from Management Institutes?
Getting a call from IIM or other Management Institutes in India entirely depends on certain attributes, which are as follow –
- Overall percentile score of CAT
- Sectional cutoffs of CAT
- Overall CAT Score
- Academic Record and Work Profile of the candidates
- Work Experience
In last week of January 2017, the IIMs will most likely release the first shortlist furnishing the names of the candidates who will be called for the further selection process. This first shortlist will be prepared on the basis of CAT score/percentile and candidates profile. Individual admission criteria have been issued by each IIM and they will follow the same for short-listing the candidates for further stages. The candidate’s performance in CAT 2016 will play an important role in the short-listing process.
A balanced high percentile is required for being short-listed. Along with the overall percentile, the candidates will also need high percentile across all the 3 sections. For the new IIMs, the sectional cutoff percentiles is expected to be around 85+ and 90+ for the existing ones. So it means that a candidate who scores in totality around 96 percentile with 90 in DI & LR, 94 in Quant and 86 in Verbal might get a call from IIMs. However, a candidate with an overall score of 99 percentile getting 97 in Quant but 78 in Verbal would miss out the call. The list of short-listed candidates will be made available on the individual official websites of IIMs.
